Home Education is when parents take on the responsibility of educating their children. They may follow a similar structure to a brick and mortar school, or it may look entirely different.

Some families choose to educate year-round, while others choose to focus on getting all their school done between the months of October – April.

Homeschool looks different for everyone. Parents research and select a curriculum for their children, then take on the role of a teacher to teach their children from home. Some curriculum options have online video instruction for children to follow as well.

Once your registration forms have been completed, you will receive an Acceptance Letter.

The Board of Trustees for the Fort Vermilion School Division does not have the right to refuse to allow a parent to home education a child if:

  1. The notification requirements of the Alberta Regulations 145/2006 for Home Education Programs have been met, and
  2. The Home Education Program as described by the Parent/Guardian indicates the intent to comply with the requirements of the Alberta Regulations 145/2006 for Home Education Programs.
  3. The student is a resident of the Board.

The Board of Trustees for the Fort Vermilion School Division, if after complying with of the Alberta Regulations 145/2006 for Home Education Programs, and after giving due consideration to the abilities of the student, may in writing terminate the program if it is found that:

  1. The student fails to meet an acceptable level of achievement, or
  2. The home education program does not continue to meet the requirements of the Alberta Regulations 145/2006 for Home Education Programs, or
  3. The parent does not comply with the Alberta Regulations 145/2006 for Home Education.

The Board of Trustees may then direct the student to a school operated by the Board.

Supervision is as little or as much as you want, so long as it follows the guidelines stated in the Alberta Home Education Handbook.

Families are required to attend 2 meetings per year with our Teacher Facilitator (fall and spring) to access any supports they may need and to document their child’s progress. They are also required to complete an Education Program Plan for each of their children at the time of registration.

Families desiring extra support may opt to join our Shared Responsibility (Blended) Program.

Our Principal will only come into your home at your request. If you prefer home visits for your Facilitator Assessment Meetings, our Teacher Facilitator, or one of our other Homeschool Facilitators, will make arrangements with you to come into your home.

The purpose of board supervision is to monitor and assess student achievement and progress. It is the home educator’s responsibility, however, to ensure that the student learning outcomes prescribed in the schedule are met through the home education program they offer.

This depends on which homeschool route you choose: Traditional or Shared Responsibility.

Traditional Facilitator Assessments occur twice per year with a Teacher Facilitator, where parents will declare how their children are doing in the subjects they are learning.

Shared Responsibility has children complete quarterly testing as a means to help assess their progress and see where assistance may be required, in addition to the two Facilitator Assessment Meetings with parents.

Testing is an excellent means of assessment, but there are other methods that may be used as well.

Projects to demonstrate knowledge, observation where the parent watches what their child is doing, and essays and other creative assignments are just a few ways in which a parent may assess their child's progress.

Assessments vary depending on the Homeschool path you take.

Traditional

  • Follows the basic homeschool outcomes that are worked on with family from kindergarten to Grade 12.
  • A yearly Education Program Plan is developed by the parents.
  • Parents purchase their choice of curriculum and participate in two Facilitator Meetings per year (fall and spring) to access any supports they may need, as stated in the Alberta Home Education Handbook.

Shared Responsibility (Blended)

  • Parents choose 1-3 courses to follow the Alberta Curriculum; NHEC purchases curriculum for the course(s).
  • Parents have multiple options to choose from for curriculum, including ones with a Christian view.
  • Students complete Unit Tests and Benchmarks in our office with the Teacher Facilitator, approximately every 3 months.
  • Subject/topic workshops and support are available for parents monthly.
  • Parents participate in fall and spring facilitator meetings and complete a student Education Program Plan.

Placement Tests are available in our office. Our Teacher Facilitator may help advise you on which grade level your child would thrive in. Many curriculums also offer placement tests/assessments online on their websites.

In many cases, yes. Trade Schools/Colleges often only require the completion of select Grade 10 level courses. If your child is interested in pursuing Post-Secondary Education, you may book an appointment with our Guidance Counsellor.
