Sports Round-Up for the week of Oct. 21 – 27

Here is the FVSD Sports round-up for Oct. 21-27!

Oct. 22

Tier 1 Jr. Girls Divisionals

The T1 Jr. Girls Divisionals took place at La Crete Public School on Oct. 22.

La Crete A Girls defeated High Level in straight sets, 25-14 and 25-20, and the moved on to the gold-medal game where they defeated Sister Gloria in straight sets, 25-22 and 25-19 for a first place finish.

High Level A Jr. Girls lost to La Crete A Jr. Girls, but then defeated Fort Vermilion Jr. Girls in the bronze medal game for a third place finish.

Fort Vermilion fell to Sister Gloria by a score of 2-1 after taking the first set by a score of 25-22. The team was defeated by High Level in the Bronze medal game.

Tier 2 Jr. Girls Divisionals

The T2 Jr. Girls Divisionals took plate at High Level Public School on Oct. 22.

Rocky Lane defeated La Crete B in straight sets, 25-16 and 25-21. The team also took a win from High Level B in straight sets, 25-16 and 29-27, moving them into the Gold medal game, where they lost to John D’Or Prairie by a score of 2-1 after taking the first set 25-23.

High Level B lost to Rocky Lane and then took on Tallcree in the Bronze medal game, where they were defeated in straight sets.

Rainbow Lake lost to Tallcree.

La Crete B lost to Rocky Lane.

Oct. 23

Jr. Boys Divisionals

The Jr. Boys Divisionals took place at La Crete Public School on Oct. 23.

La Crete A defeated High Level in straight sets, 25-22 and 25-19, and moved into the Gold medal game where they defeated John D’Or Prairie in straight sets, 25-22, and 25-21.

High Level lost to La Crete A, moving them into the Bronze medal game where they faced off against La Crete B. High Level defeated La Crete B 2-1 in the Bronze medal game, losing the first set 25-13 and then rallying in successive sets 25-10 and 17-15.

Grande Prairie

Grande Prairie Composite High School Pow Wow Invitational

High Level and La Crete Sr. Volleyball teams travelled to Grande Prairie last weekend (Oct. 25 and 26) where they took part in tournament play. Additional team information was provided by the coaches of those teams.

Sr. Boys Bracket information

La Crete (1A) and High Level (4B) faced off in the first round of the tournament, with La Crete moving on to the second round. The La Crete team then lost to St. John Paul II and moved into the bronze medal game, where they defeated EW Pratt to secure third place in the tournament.

HLPS Sr. Boys Coach’s write-up

The HLPS Senior Boys played Saint John Paul II, losing in two closely-contested sets – scoring 20 or more points in both sets. JPII went on to place second in the tournament.

In their second game, HLPS stepped up their game and beat Chetwynd in straight sets.

In their third game resulted in a lost in straight sets to Peace Wapiti Academy. PWA would go on to win the tournament. The HLPS Sr. Boys played PWA tough and both sets were closely-contested with scores of 20 or more points.

On Saturday, the team played its last pool game against North Peace. The High Level boys came out strong and got off to a 16-4 lead in the first set. Ultimately, the team fell in their third set.

In the quarterfinal against La Crete, High Level dropped the first set by five points, won the second set, and lost a tight third set to end their weekend.

The team saw lots of growth throughout the weekend and coaches are encouraged by their progress. The team hopes to continue that growth and find greater success in the next few weekends.

Sr. Girls Bracket Information

The La Crete (1C) girls team defeated North Peace (4D) in the first round of the tournament, and then defeated Oscar Romero in the second round to secure a birth in the gold medal game. They were in tough against PWA and lost in the final, but secured a silver medal for their efforts.

High Level (5D) Lost to Sexsmith JV (5C) to wrap up the tournament.

High Level Sr. Girls Coach’s write-up

The Senior Girls showed great improvement throughout the weekend in Grande Prairie. They showed grit and determination while facing stiff competition. Their continued perseverance is encouraging and we look forward to continued growth during the rest of the season. 

Peace River

Nomad Invitational

High Level and La Crete Jr. Volleyball teams also travelled to Peace River two weekends ago (Oct. 19-20) for tournament play. Team information was provided by the coaches of those teams.

High Level Jr. Boys Coach’s write-up

The boys team played well all weekend, earning a win in round robin play.

High Level Jr. Girls Coach’s write-up

In a weekend filled with excitement and true competition, the HLPS Jr. Girls played four games against competitive teams which allowed them to see different styles of volleyball.

The team played hard and had some very close sets, beginning against Peace Wapiti Academy. The team played a close game but was unable to overcome PWA. Later, they played Hillside and took them to three sets. It was a very close game, with one set going 28-26.

On Saturday, the team played against Grande Prairie Composite High School, playing the team tight but falling in close sets.

The team finished in fourth place and were seeded against St. John Paul II – the number one team in their pool. JP2 is a strong and developed team, and High Level was in tough against them, ultimately dropping the game.

Overall, the weekend was filled with fun and the girls were in competitive mode, trying to climb to the top. High Level Jr. Girls are in a rebuild year with three returning players. The team has shows exceptional growth this year.
