FVSD LIteracy Plan

 

1. Shared Vision-Stakeholders will share understanding of and commitment to effective literacy programming in their school.

Strategies

Actions 

Provide literacy support for teachers in Grades K-12.

Provide professional learning opportunities, literacy supports in Kindergarten and K-12.

Provide Divisional Events for students to promote and encourage life-long literacy learning.

  • Literacy Gala
  • Writing Celebrations

Coaching, modeling, providing PD to teachers in the area of literacy.

Arrange PD for the implementation of Lucy Calkins, provide ongoing support for Writers and Readers Workshop.



2. Literacy Leadership-Leaders at all levels have the capacity to champion the implementation of literacy programming in their schools.

Literacy Coaches


Kindergarten teachers will all try to complete three units of the Lucy Calkins Units of Study in Kindergarten Phonics. 


Grade one and two teachers will participate in a research project with George Georgiou from the University of Alberta


Units of Study in Reading and Writing



  • Work with teachers and students

  • Introduce a district wide Phonics program in Kindergarten

  • Train admin and teachers

  • Follow the Reading Project program that introduces a scope and sequence for the teaching of letters and sounds.










3.Research and Evidence-The implementation of literacy programs are based on current research, evidence (assessment) and lessons learned.

Grade One Reading Project with the University of Alberta


Support and provide professional development in the Units of Study in Phonics, Units of Study in Reading and the Units of Study in Writing.


Grade Two Intervention Project


Literacy Coaches




  • Train teachers. Students will receive ten minutes of Phonemic Awareness, ten minutes of Phonics and have a ten minute related activity each day.
  • Send out PD opportunities in Alberta to teachers
  • Develop criteria for presenters, facilitators, and coaches
  • Train Interventionists to work with students that struggle with reading in grade one and two.

 





4. Resources-Human resources, materials, funding and infrastructure are in place to support effective literacy programming.

  • Literacy Coaches and Grade One teachers will be trained and work with George Georgiou and Kristy Dunn.
  • Training will be provided for Phonics, Reading and Writing
  • Schools will train Empower Teachers and students will be in Empower Classes for 50 minutes a day.
  • Grade 1-3 will implement the use of a phonics program.
  • Some schools will implement the Units of Study in Writing














5. Quality Programming-Teachers provide quality literacy programming for all students and have access to professional learning opportunities - teacher knowledge, skills and attributes are enhanced through ongoing professional learning related to effective literacy programming.
