Special Education Services in the FVSD

Integration of Special Education Students
Fort Vermilion School Division is committed to providing appropriate educational opportunities for all students in supportive learning environments. We believe that students with special education needs should be included in regular age-appropriate classrooms in the neighborhood school whenever possible.

Each school integrates students with special education needs and establishes appropriate instructional programs based upon the following considerations:

  • The academic, physical, emotional and social needs of the students
  • The number of students requiring a special program
  • Class size
  • The availability of appropriate facilities
  • The availability of appropriately qualified staff
  • The availability of program planning time
  • Program costs
  • School and division budgets
  • Other factors significant to a specific program

The needs of special education students are identified through individual assessment, classroom observation and parental input.

Procedures

  1. Students who may have special education needs are referred through the Special Education Coordinator at the school for assessment.
  2. All referrals for further assessment must have parental consent.
  3. Appropriate personnel inform parents of specialized assessment results and recommendations.
  4. Written parental permission is required before a student is placed in a special education program, and parents are informed of any program change.
  5. The school reviews student placements annually.
  6. An Individual Program Plan is developed and implemented within a reasonable length of time for each student identified with special education needs.
  7. A school based team is put in place to guide the development and implementation of the Individual Program Plan for each student with special education needs. The Learning Team may include but is not limited to the parent(s), teacher(s), Special Education coordinator, other school personnel as appropriate, the student where appropriate, and additional service providers who are involved in developing, implementing and monitoring the student’s program.
  8. Student progress is evaluated regularly and reported to parents.
  9. Support services are available to assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of all special education programming.
