General Information
OFFICE HOURS
Daily office hours are from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Doors open for students at 8:10 a.m.
PARKING 
Parking is available for staff and parents on the south side of the school. We ask for cooperation in not using the reserved sections of the parking lot during school hours. Please do not park in the drop off lanes or the bus lane area.
BUSING
Transportation to and from school is available for all students. The Fort Vermilion School Division at no charge provides transportation for rural students. Urban students residing less than 2.4 kilometers from the school may obtain transportation on an existing bus route provided a fee is paid in advance to the school division. To make arrangements for transportation, please call the Fort Vermilion School Division Central Office (927-3766) or Fort Vermilion School Division Bus Garage (928-3860).
DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS 
Opening Ceremonies will begin with our National Anthem and information sharing. All announcements are broadcast over the entire school beginning right after O’ Canada at 8:38 a.m. and also before each recess, before lunch and prior to the school day’s end.
SCHOOL CALENDARS
School calendars are handed out at the end of each month. These calendars, which include special events, are a handy reference for parents and students alike. These calendars are available on our website or can be emailed to you. If you would like to receive the newsletter by email, please send request to shellyc@fvsd.ab.ca
COLD WEATHER POLICY
School buses do not run when the temperature is -40C or below, however the school remains open. Bus cancellations are announced on the local radio station (102.1 or 106.1 on the FM dial) by 7:00 am.
LOST AND FOUND
A lost and found bin is located in the school lobby. Your son’s/daughter’s belongings should be clearly marked to help recover lost belongings.
INDOOR FOOTWEAR
Indoor footwear is expected for all students. Since students all have lockers we suggest using them to prevent loss of valuables and personal effects.
EVACUATION AND SECURITY LOCKDOWN
Evacuation routes and Lockdown routines are posted on the walls of each classroom. In order to avoid any complications, students are requested to become familiar with the procedures and exits they would use for each classroom they occupy through the day. Evacuation and Lockdown drills are conducted at various times during the year. Students are encouraged to wear indoor footwear at all times in the event of an evacuation.
STUDENT FEES
Instructional Fee -$15.00 Grades 4-6
(25% discount as per Division policy) If there are more than 3 students registered.
Student Services Fee -$20.00 Student Fee
These fees are due at the beginning of the school year. An additional student services fee of $20.00 for all grades is charged to cover the cost of a locker and lock, special presentations brought into the school during the year and disposable items used in exploratory courses.
MEDICAL INFORMATION
Please inform the school of any medical problems your son/daughter may have. It is necessary for us to know about the problem and the immediate treatment if we are to respond wisely given any emergency situation. If your son/daughter requires medications, he/she must bring a supply from home. Such items can be stored in the main office and upon written parental request will be administered by school personnel.
PERSONAL INFORMATION
Students get upset and require extra and special attention at times of crisis in the home. We ask that parents inform the teacher if there is a situation of critical illness, bereavement or family discord in the home.
PARENT PARTICIPATION
Spirit of the North Community School welcomes parents who would like to become volunteers for curricular or extra-curricular events happening in the school. Please call the school to leave your name as a parent volunteer.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
In keeping with School Board policy, a School Council is established early in the school year. The purpose of this council is to advise school administration and the Board. School Council is comprised of at least twelve elected parents, one member of the business community, one elected teacher representative and at least one school administrator. The council may also include one student representative. All parents of students at SNCS are encouraged to attend the monthly school council meetings. During mid-September we will be forming a school council. Dates and times will be advertised.
TELEPHONES
Two telephones are provided in the school for student use. The telephone in the main office is for business use only and is only to be used by students in the case of emergencies. The office secretary will take messages for students in the event of a family matter. The student phone will have a 2-minute time length and any number called cannot be successfully redialed for 5 minutes after hanging up.
LOCKERS
All students will be provided with a locker and lock following payment of the $20.00 student services fee. Students should note that although lockers are the property of the school, any damage to them may be charged to the occupant of the locker.
Conditions for locker use are as follows:
lockers are to be secured with a lock supplied by the school.
the school reserves the right of entry at anytime without the student’s permission.
students are responsible for the safe storage of their possessions including clothing and footwear
