Read to Achieve
Students who are reading significantly below grade level receive intensive reading instruction. This is provided in the form of intervention for primary students using an Early Literacy Program, and in the form of remediation for older students. The Early Literacy Program targets students in grades 1 and 2. This jurisdictionally supported and funded Early Literacy Program is an adaptation of the Reading Recovery model. FVSD continues to look at other instructional programming for students participating in the Early Literacy Program.
Older grades see a variety of different means of both in-class and pull-out support. These remediation programs will be reviewed and improved to ensure the provision of intensive reading instruction for struggling readers. In Read to Achieve students receive the help necessary to improve their reading skills. It should be noted that other school-based supports are put in place for struggling readers.
A Pyramid of Intervention has been developed to ensure assistance for struggling readers. The most significant element of this pyramid is the Foundational support that students are receiving in their regular language arts instruction. The nature of the Balanced Literacy framework readily lends itself to helping the struggling readers in grade 1 to 6. In the same way the instructional programming for junior high students, as directed by Best Practices in Reading and Writing, also supports the struggling reader. With these supports in place some of our struggling readers will begin to approach reading at grade level. For those identified students that require more targeted intervention, other programs will be utilized in the division.
