The Bluehills community consists of low-German (Plautdiesch) speaking Mennonites.
There are four different Mennonite denominations: Old Colony, Sommerfelder, Bergthaler, Evangelical Mennonite Conference.
Most local Mennonites are conservative by nature discouraging computers and television.
Despite being conservative they drive vehicles, use cell phones and use modern machinery to farm.

The area is rural with grain and cattle farming. Some fathers work in the woods during the winter.
Trucking is a common occupation.
Mothers are stay at home moms. |

The “La Crete” ferry is 15 min from the school. During the winter the ferry is removed and an ice bridge is constructed. |
